London, August 1, 2010

After breakfast, Robert, Steve, Becky, Mark, and I went into London for the day. Laura stayed at home and caught up on her own projects. Robert drove to Bexley, where we caught the train. First stop was the London Eye.

There was a 25-minute wait to get onto the ride, and it was overcast, so we decided to walk along the Thames in Southwark to the Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern. It was a beautiful day, although overcast, and many families and couples were strolling along the riverbank.

Along the way we saw several street performers, and some amazing graffitti. The Tate Modern is a great space. We spent several hours roaming the exhibits on just 2 floors. Some of the art was great - some terrific photography - and some was just plain too way out for our tastes.

We had a nice lunch in the Tate Cafe. Becky and Mark had Trashy Blonde beer, which had a humorous label.

After lunch we wanted to tour the Globe Theatre, but there were no tours because there was a matinee performance going on. So we'll add this spot to the list of things to do on the next trip to London.

We walked across the Millennium Bridge to St. Paul's cathedral. There was a service going on, so we heard some music, and as we left the bells pealed. Then we hopped into a taxi to get back to London Bridge train station and catch the train to Bexley.

We made beer can chicken for dinner, although it was in the oven because the barbeque didn't have a cover.

Laura arrived back home just as dinner was ready to go on the table; she dropped Alec off at Heathrow for his 2-week trip to Thailand, Laos, and China. We had a lovely evening filled with many stories about MIT and much merriment.
